Although I’m very aware of value studies, I have only ever created them using photographs, so taking objects and trying to identify the lightest lights and darkest darks were a real challenge for me. I used an apple, banana, mushrooms and a vase for my studies. I did find it very difficult at the start and was rather slow.

The banana seemed the hardest one for me to work out and I had to ‘step away’ after a while. However, I was quite happy with the apple and mushroom. I can definitely see the benefits of incorporating this exercise as a continuous habit. It just makes you look that little bit more carefully at things.
