Know your art

I don’t have experience working with real clients. I plan on taking this path now, so my exercise was from a dream-career perspective if that makes sense. From what I’ve observed and feel I identify with, my illustrations could be used for editorials, publishing, and packaging in some instances. I want to see my illustrations on products, especially fashion design brands (I know I’m aiming high). Other than that, I’m in the process of learning the possibilities.

That being said, here are my insights:

Part 1: Your Virtuosity

  1. My work is colourful and simple, though I have great influence from comics and pencil drawing. I draw semi-realistic style emphasising shading and detailing foldings or textures in my sketches; my lines are shaky so I’m exploring getting it simpler and more stylistic rather than proportional and realistic. I’m still testing whether I feel more comfortable with flat colour + hard shading, adding texture, keeping lineart and other aspects
  2. My art is dynamic, quirky and fun. I’d say it’s playful and lively
  3. I work more from ideas and interpretation of a concept, thinking of one or more elements to represent it or even a small scene where a story is set. I’m more literal in the depiction of objects and elements and I’ll usually try to get as close as possible to a real and literal representation, though it’s not so photo-realistic.
  4. I see my illustrations working well for editorials and publishing, as well as in packaging designs.
  5. I have more experience drawing on paper and I’m still used to physical sketchbooks. I keep that and other mixed media papers to explore and generate ideas. Currently, when I work on a project, I use Adobe Fresco to sketch out ideas and then follow the colouring process and details on Photoshop I like to use a pencil brush during sketches, an ink style brush when I’m refining it, and some textured brushes for shading and extra details I also use Illustrator for some details, vector or to lay out a presentation I do use other media, but for professional purposes I’ll stick to the digital tools in my process. I had a similar process of illustration before coming across this class. However, I’d just select the keywords, collect images, create a moodboard and colour palette out of the main references, and use them to sketch. and figure out the composition from that stage. I think taking my time to study from observation before jumping into the composition sketch is indeed helpful. So I’m following this way from now on
  6. I’m a slow worker. I challenged myself to personal projects but there were so many things going on, especially to define the style just like mentioned in the course. From my tests, I’d take about 1 week for a small project, considering the need to add other activities on my days. I don’t do well if I push myself too hard on consecutive days and neglect other areas of my life. By now I know my best moment to work and how my energy levels flow throughout the day and the week, so at least I know how to manage it.
  7. I prefer to work alone. all stages of my process are accompanied by music of various styles and rhythms, but I avoid chill songs as my energy depletes with calming sounds (I leave it for when I need to wind down). I don’t listen to podcasts at any stage because I can’t concentrate well. When I’m working on a project, I definitely like to have my coffee in the mornings and a reminder not to skip meals.

Part 2: Your Vision

  1. I believe that a visual message can touch the heart and mind of the viewer and last longer than a handful of detailed words on a subject. I illustrate because I want to tell visual stories.
  2. I love the idea of exploring and widening my worldview. With each different subject to illustrate there's plenty to learn, and that’s one of my life values. I can approach a project with curiosity and am open to learning new things
  3. I’m not too sure about it as I don’t have enough experience to consider it. I’d say that I’ll have to learn how to communicate and deal with clients
  4. Some famous fashion design brands. I have a background in fashion design and I’d love to work on a collaborative collection. I also think of some collaborative work with artists.
  5. It's similar to the previous one, the projects would be illustrated collections. I also want to work on a big project that includes many different skills and professionals
  6. I want to share a message, and a story with my illustrations and cause the viewer to reflect on that, to think about it, and most of all, I want to cause a positive impact, a smile.
  7. In one year I want to have a certain client base for editorial illustrations and add publishing,  packaging and other related markets. In 5 years I want to start working with artists and fashion brands. From then on, I want to work with bigger and more famous brands, receive illustration awards and get invitations for speaking at events. I also want to publish illustrated books and graphic novels.
  8. Editorials, fashion, graphic novels. My first idea with illustration is to tell a story and even before I considered the possibility of working with illustrations, I dreamed about creating my comics. I have a passion for fashion, but not only in the sense of fashion illustrations, I want to use it differently.
  9. Children’s books, technical, science. I don’t see myself working on a style that appeals to this public.
  10. Murals, a cover of a magazine, a T-shirt graphic (or as I mentioned before, a fashion collection), labels on products (not necessarily beer). Maybe an art exhibition
