Elemental Guardian : Colour class project
Love love love Ira's classes, always feel like I get really good work from them and I learn so much.
I am definitely a two sketch person, not sure if I am either patient or skilled enough for three but I'm happy with that process for now.
I chose artist Elizabeth Neal as I really like the way her art scratches the back of my brain, I like the colours, the way it seems messy but with purpose. I chose this piece as I love purple and I love green so it was perfect for me. This immediately gave me a troll like/earthy vibe - with mossy clothes and messy hair. I work in Procreate so I used distort to pull my sketch out a little, felt like the proportion was a little squished and boxy.
I then moved onto my lines and added the colour. I played with the hue, as the class highlighted the difference this can make and settled on this from the original colour pick. I wanted it to have an earth toned vibe so felt this suited the character best.
I do generally keep almost everything on a separate layer incase I want to make changes at a later date.
I will include the finished product and the night time style image. I did include a version with black linework, I usually like to have my lines in a deep red because I like the slightly washed out or faded look, like a nice warm light is over everything, I do enjoy the contrast of a black line, I'm just not brave enough to commit to it yet haha.
A couple of things that I will be taking away from this class will be:
- studying artists and their use of colour for inspo (sometimes I get caught up in thinking it all has to come from inside my brain somewhere and I can't look at anything else)
- Colour burn and colour dodge! wow. I usually use multiply for shadows and screen or add for highlights, and I normally swap my colours. So say I'm doing shadow on the skin, I'd use the skin colour on multiply then turn down the opacity, then when I was on the green moss dress, I'd do the same with the green. Using the same shadow colour makes it look much more like shadow so I will be incorporating this into my work. Colour dodge, never really knew what it was so didn't use it but again, makes so much sense.
Thank you thank you thank you for yet another incredible class.
