Really nice work Elaine. You ask about mixing hatching styles, it's your choice. It's about light and shade, the denser the hatching the darker the shade. It doesn't matter, in my opinion, whether you choose cross hatching or tighter hatching in one direction so long as it describes what is there and doesn't look out of place. I really like the border around the ice cream cone. Lovely idea. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. I'm learning "loose sketching" like the flower border here on Skill Share from Toby Haseler. He keeps the "realistic side of me" in check. Ha ha!

As far as you byline "Senior with a new pasttime" - I'm 72 and started studying art about 3 years ago. Finally, a hobby with no end of learning and experimenting.

I'm 71 in July Elaine. I'm following Toby as well, having done several of his loose urban sketching courses and a couple of doodle courses. Incredible teacher. My hope is that when I go on holiday to Wales in June I'll be able to sketch as well as photograph the scenery. I also follow Teoh Yi Chie, also a good urban sketcher and more. I can recommend him, if you're interested. Also Imran Mughal has a good course on pen and ink with technical pens, but I used my Fine Liner pens for the course with the same outcome. That course might help you better understand line work, hatching and shading. Just a thought.

I will definitely check those instructors! Thanks! I heard somewhere not to concentrate on too many different methods, but I study pen and ink and watercolor at the same time. I'd like to combine them. Thanks again for the tips.

Like for the cookie shadow, I could have used straight, parallel lines, but that doesn't seem to be my nature. Is it "right" to mix the style in a drawing? Tips appreciated.
