Experimental trees

This was lots of fun to do, it kept me entertained all weekend and had me out of bed early to start painting before the rest of my family was awake ;)

I looked around my house for things I could use to apply masking fluid and found (among others) sticks from trees, chopsticks, a silicone drinking straw and toilet rolls. I also used a brush (with soap) and my dip pen. I loved doing all the layers. The technique reminds me of batik (wax on fabric and then dyeing).

I first did experiments in my sketchbook. I haven't added pencil to these yet.

And then today I wanted to test some other paper with the masking fluid, but I ended up doing small illustrations that I would like to take further. Maybe something with a dark starry sky above, or a larger wood with birds in the trees...
