Oh wow, Luitgard. This is so delicate and pretty and makes a strong repeat pattern. Way to go! The line in the middle may be caused by misalignment of your two rectangles. I would check and see if they moved slightly and also check you have no stroke on the rectangle. I usually hide those initial rectangles and use the large background square for the color on the pattern.

Thanks a lot for your help! I indeed had a stroke on the rectangles. But the square in the middle still refuses to vanish.
