Imperfectly Perfect - loose watercolor

Adjective: stop overworking, practice loose watercolor.

Day 1: Red Pepper

Day 2: A bumpy day with Dragon Fruit

Imperfectly Perfect - loose watercolor - image 2 - student projectThe slices turned out well. But got discouraged with the whole dragon fruit. It is very overworked and in part I gave up because I wanted it to look right (ie Perfect) though this one looks ok, it’s my least favourite for that reason.

BUT…!

I took time away from it, came back after watching loose watercolor tutorials closer, and tried just the brush strokes and color blooms - and that’s when I hit breakthrough!

Day 2 (part 2)

This was the effect I was going for! So I was very encouraged.

Day 3: Mushrooms

So I applied what I did the day before into a more recognizable object. And was very pleased!!

Day 4: Grapes

a little more watery, but in the end I liked how the colors flowed together. And the grapes were allowed to be incomplete, and each touching another. More natural. More flow.

Day 5: Autumn Leaves

moving away from food, the leaves outside caught my eye. Perhaps took a step backwards with this one, a bit more worked than the last 2 days. But still improvement. Also tried lifting the watercolor to create highlights.

Day 6: Ghost Peppers and a fiery letter

the Letter to your inner critic was FIRE! Loved this exercise and took full advantage!

Imperfectly Perfect - loose watercolor - image 8 - student projectImperfectly Perfect - loose watercolor - image 9 - student projectToday I challenged myself to be bold somehow. I tried something new by painting the background “ghost” peppers. Very light, minimal detail, basic shapes. Then after it dried, the pop of the ghost peppers in full color. My husband grew these this year, so they are extra awesome!

Also used a fine line brush to create the outline. I figured the hottest peppers should pop as much as possible. LOL

Day 7: Happy Pears

I spent more time on this one because I wanted to revisit backgrounds. I’m very pleased with this at this point in my creative learning.

Final Thoughts:

this is one of my favourite classes - really got alot out of it. Became more aware and saw the improvements that I wanted to get out of it.
