North American Quilting Artists can make a Global Impact on Women's Empowerment - student project

Using embroidery blocks in your art from the southernstichers.org's platform can help support the financial needs of economically backward women from the South.

San Juan, 21 May 2023: The Southern Stitchers, an online marketplace to raise funds by selling embroidered items made by marginalized communities, was launched this week in North America. The Advocacy Project(AP) is a nonprofit that supports marginalized communities from the global South by empowering social justice advocates with technological resources and charitable funding & by teaching life skills.

Facing gendered structural and social barriers and without early training and experience, most young women in the Global South are either economically inactive or pushed into unpaid or underpaid informal jobs that exclude them from social protection benefits, limiting the development of needed professional skills and networks.

Women and children from many marginalized communities supported by the Advocacy Project have now found strength in telling their traumatic stories about forced child marriages, being abducted for slavery, and unintended sex work. They are now seeking communal solutions to financial difficulties by selling craft items, embroidery pieces, and handmade bags through Southern Stichers.

A study posted on the gates foundation website has highlighted that the global economy would grow by an estimated US$28 trillion by the year 2025. Empowered women and girls contribute to the health and productivity of their families, communities, and countries, creating a ripple effect that benefits everyone.

An initial launch will include embroidered blocks, handmade bags, and wall hangings that can be used by artists in North America & Europe in broader designs like cushion covers, dresses, wall paintings, etc.

"Our goal is to help these amazing women and girls earn an income and put a value on their embroidery," said Bobbi Fitzsimmons, who coordinates AP's quilting program.

"Please allow me to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the advocacy project for this initiative of letting women attain economic growth and access to credit," said Constance Mugari, Founder and director of Women Advocacy Project, Harare, Zimbabwe.
