Diane's Castle ( Art cover: Sam Yang )

(This takes place in a world where all planets in the solar system are habitable)
“Uranus? That’s so far- you’d be there for years! Why does it even matter to you so much if you don’t even want to do it?” Woody asked, starting to get annoyed at the random persistence of his cousin. “Look, It pays well and I’ll be closer to Eve through Diane. If we want her investments, we’ve gotta network it out” Her voice spoke in an optimistic light.
“Bloodrayne, I don’t want her damn investment if it means we go through hell, we’ll find some other way; Also! We BOTH know Diane is full of-”
“Team work makes the dream work, Woody! Plus we don’t even know Diane or if those stories are true! Loo, I need your help if we don’t want to end up bankrupt or homeless,” She unzipped the luggage, getting ready to pack for her trip.
“We need this support, for Klee, Woody. Think about Klee.”
Woody thought for a second. His youngest cousin Klee, 7 years old, was in their custody, she was audistic and thin, they needed more nutrition and resources for her, their cavern needed more business. “It wouldn’t be fair to you. They won’t treat you well, and you know that.” He said, knowing she would dismiss his words and carry on anyway. He looked at the floor in defeat.
She smiled. “Knowing that you’ll be safe, here, with her getting everything she needs to survive will make it easier for me.” She turned her head towards her bedroom. “I’m going to get my stuff and be on my way. Woody,” He looked her in the eyes. “Work hard and send messages, if satellites or Wifi don't work, send letters,” Woody nodded as light drained from his eyes, knowing how serious this is and knowing he may never see her in person again. “And please, for the love of God. If you must write, MAKE IT LEGIBLE” She joked.
He chuckled slightly then his smile slowly washed off as she left to grab her things.
Woody turned and started walking towards the front door. He peered through a window to see Klee happily playing with her crafted toys. She would only ever really speak when playing, when talking to others she could barely utter a full audible sentence.
He took a deep breath and sighed slowly.
“Alright. I’m heading out!” Bloodrayne shouted as she grabbed her luggage. “Wait,” she walked over to Woody and opened the front door. “Klee! Sissie’s leaving! Gimme a hug!” Klee happily jumped up and hugged Bloodrayne.
“I’ll be back okay?” Bloodrayne said while letting go of the embrace. Klee nodded then went back to playing with her crafts.
Bloodrayne’s eyes wandered across the area, taking everything in before she had to leave. Woody cleared his throat. “Are you sure this is necessary?” He asked in a monotone voice. Bloodrayne looked back, towards him and smiled widely. “Yeah, It’ll be worth it, and I will be back.” She reassured him. Woody was no stranger to her wide smiles. She was nervous. He tried to swallow back his further objections. He grabbed her luggage and handed it to her.
She wanted to ask for a hug but knew he was upset and wouldn’t let her. She said “Goodbye, I’ll miss you guys.” then started walking towards the sidewalk to wait for her driver to pick her up, taking a deep breath while her driver pulled up.
She put all luggage in the trunk then waved to Klee who waved back joyfully then watched as Woody picked up Klee and took her inside without giving her a single glance. A sinking feeling of loneliness washed over her as she got into the vehicle, leaving all she ever knew, to defend for themselves while she attempts to get help in one of the most risky ways.
They drove for what felt like days but was only a few hours to the Netlyn Conner Space Station.
The driver dropped her off, helped her with her luggage, she paid for the ride, then walked into the station.
Walking into the space station was like walking into a toy store, the sunset shine from outside gave the inside a beautiful orange-ish yellow hue and the fanciness of the interior made it feel so prideful and pretentious. Surprisingly, it wasn’t really packed. She walked over to the box office line to buy her ticket to Uranus.
While looking around she spotted a worker in an empty hall, but something was off about them. They were just staring at the wall. She glanced around some more and saw robot security. “Oh! This station just uses robots, that makes more sense.” She thought. It was her next in line and the robot worker at the box office window called her up.
The robot smiled at her and said “Hello! I’m 84H, how can I help you?”
“Hi. I’m here to purchase a ticket to Uranus.”
“Alright, that will be about 950 Ve’s”
Bloodrayne gulped at the amount of currency it was. She gave the robot her card and the robot scanned it. “Thank you for her purchase, here’s your ticket,” The robot gave her her ticket. “Anything else I can help with?” it asked. “No thank you. That’ll be all”.
“Okay, have a lovely and safe trip!” The robot exclaimed, ending the conversation.
Bloodrayne grabbed and put her ticket into her pocket and looked at the robot she had seen before staring blank in an empty hall. She thought, “Crap, forgot to ask for directions. I’ll just ask that robot since it’s waiting for a task”
She walked over to the bot. “Hello, do you know where the Uranus take-offs are?” She asked politely. The bot turned to her and thought for a second. “Would you like me to guide you there?” A sense of want filled their voice which sounded odd to her. “Yes, that would be very helpful”
“Great, follow me!” The bot spun around, his body twisting in an abnormal way and started walking to the ride side of the station. She thought back to the odd pause the robot had, robots don’t think, they know. She followed closely behind them.
“Right over here!” the robot happily exclaimed, stopping in its tracks. Bloodrayne looked at the huge line to get aboard and gulped. “How long is the wait?” she asked the robot but the robot stayed silent as if it ignored her. “Excuse me?” she raised her voice to try to grab its attention. The robot looked at her without moving its head. That gave her an eerie feeling. “Um. How long is the wait?” The robot stared at her for a few seconds then its eyes darted at her ticket in her pocket. It opened its mouth, about to speak when someone cut them off.
“HEY! THERE IT IS! STOP IT!” shouted a sprout being as they pointed robot security to the robot that led Bloodrayne. Confused, she looked back up at the bot when it suddenly split it’s hand into her pocket and stole her ticket then stretched it’s limbs onto a chandelier and swung away.
Shocked, Bloodrayne yelled. “HEY, IT STOLE MY TICKET!”.
She began to chase it into the boarding area of the rockets. “SOMEONE STOP IT!” She shouted in desperation. She couldn’t catch up with the rogue bot and fell to the floor. She couldn’t believe her literal, one-way-ticket out of here was gone. Her eyes filled with water as she cried, knowing she failed them.
She suddenly saw a blue light in the corner of her eye. A Uranian. Using their powers gifted by the Zodiac Constellations she stops it in mid air. Telekinesis, assumed Bloodrayne. The woman lifts it over to the ground next to her feet and security detains it. The woman grabbed the ticket out of its hands and looked around.
“That’s my tick-et!” huffed an out of breath Bloodrayne as she stumbled towards the woman. The woman smiled happily and gave Bloodrayne her ticket in which she thanked her profusely. The woman laughed at Bloodrayne’s gratitude. “That thing is a slippery Coven Flip. They come from Uranus and sometimes Neptune. They are stretchy and like to invade planets to steal things. They are just greedy beasts,” The woman explained. “You must watch out for those things.”
“HEY!” yelled the sprout being from before. “That THING stole my expensive diamond! WHERE IS IT YOU RAT?!” the sprout yelled at the Coven Flip, but all it did was chuckle. “It’s gone, I ate it” it said in a raspy broken voice, revealing its true sounds.
“NO, HOW COULD YOU! YOU’RE LYING! THAT WAS MY AUNTS, YOU KNOW HOW MANY VE’S THAT IS?!” The sprout continued while Bloodrayne sighed at that close call.
“Where ya goin’?” Asked the woman who Bloodrayne just now realized was still here.
“O-OH! Erm. Diane’s Castle for ah, a job.” The woman looked slightly surprised. “Diane's Castle aye?”. Bloodrayne nodded in response.
“Well then, let’s go!” The woman joyfully said while walking towards the front of the line. “W-wait!” Yelled a confused Bloodrayne. “I have to wait in line!” She uttered out while trying to keep up with the speed walking woman. “Not anymore” said the woman, making Bloodrayne even more puzzled. “But why?” asked Bloodrayne. “Because I’m Diane! So let’s hurry up and get there so you can show me what you have to offer~” Smiled Diane as Bloodrayne’s eyes lit up from this exciting news.
