An artist is only as good as their brushes. In this workshop, you’ll make your perfect set. First, you’ll learn how to create brushes from scratch, experimenting with different sizes and effects. Then, you’ll learn an abstract marbling technique, and use it to create some unusual marble brushes. Finally, you’ll learn how to make patterns and pattern brushes. In the end, you’ll have a set of custom brushes, designed by you and for you — to further close the gap between what you imagine and what you create. This workshop is for intermediate Procreate users ready to experiment with new tools and speed things up without sacrificing style or attention to detail.

- Milestone 1: In iPad Art: Make Gorgeous Custom Brushes in Procreate, artist and illustrator Nic Squirrel will walk you through creating custom Procreate brushes. You’ll learn how to make a brush from real paint, how to create a stamp brush, and how to build brushes with Procreate’s built-in tools. Share an image created with your new brushes in the project gallery by April 25th.
- Milestone 2: Next up, product designer Rich Armstrong will teach you a versatile digital marbling technique in Digital Marbling: Create Stunning Abstract Art in Procreate. Take note: you won’t be submitting Rich’s class project for this milestone. Instead, use the skills you learned in your first class to create custom marble brushes for your set. Share an image created with your marble brushes in the project gallery by May 3rd.
- Milestone 3: Lastly, illustrator and surface pattern designer Sandra Bowers will show you how to apply your skills to repeat patterns in Create Patterns and Pattern Brushes in Procreate. Don’t worry — before you’re expected to make pattern brushes, you’ll learn how to make the patterns themselves (without any math!). Share an image created with your pattern brushes in the project gallery by May 13th.
