This got me thinking about separation outdoors. Like in the light blue frame the house is lit by daylight in through the windows, and I have a tungsten light as my key with a CTO bounce, and you can see atleast my face skintones are preserved. But if you're outdoors what's a good way for separation? If films are primarily two-tone to control for color, and my environment is green and blue, should I push everything to blue green in post and keep subjects wearing neutral colors? it seems like fighting sunlight with gel'd lights is impossible, especially if you shoot wide or there's any motion in broad daylight.

Hey Sean, I ended up running some more testsincluding a subtle backlight 4300K upstairs behind me through a softbox. DIdn't have as strong an effect as I wanted. I only wore neutral colors so I could select low-sat in post and push it towards the background color without losing skintones.

Nice. Exposure looks very good on wider shot. A little under on tighter. You could air a hair light with blue gel to match that background and get even more separation

Thanks! I sometimes wonder what the right level of separation is? Just max it out? use exposure, gels, hair light, color temperature all together? I was on a shoot one time where the background was so different it sort of looked like we had green screened it in the closeups haha
