Zoey's Extraordinary Calligraphy

Zoey's Extraordinary Calligraphy - image 1 - student project

I chose the show Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist for the project. I find the show to be a feast for the eyes and the ears. It is colorful, musical, funny, sad, and unique. Zoey is a young professional woman who works in the male-dominated field of IT. She likes to be in control but more often than not she is lost and confused. Her mother organizes a party for Zoey's 30th birthday. This is shortly after Zoey's dad has passed away. The family decides that this party would also be a wonderful way to honor his memory. He loved his family and had such a zest for life. The show manages to remain hopeful and joyful even when it deals with difficult and sad situations. This is a photo of my inspiration boards:

I wanted the font to be modern and simple so I chose to have no slant and a flat baseline. I also decided to have simple ascenders with no loops. Somehow this seemed to represent the IT world of Zoey's work.

To add a touch of feminine and playful or musical mood, I added swashes at some of the entrances or exits of words. The vowels are closed like the button-up sweaters that Zoey wears. I tried several brush pens and decided to use the Fudenosuke. I also experimented with the proportions of my letters and ultimately chose the ratio 1.5:1:1.

Here is my final alphabet page:

To decorate the invitation, I used geometric frames for the IT world and flowers because Zoey often had flower patterns on her sweaters. Here are my previous drafts of the invitation:

This project was so much fun!! I have had difficulty developing fonts and creating styles. I love the approach you taught us in this class and particularly to start with a mood, a show or characters, and an inspiration board. I am going to keep trying more of these! Thank you!
