Valerie Funk Project - Hopi Skies
Design Sketch / Base Layout
Since my design sketch was colored digitally I had to make some concessions when it came to color. I chose to go with a slightly more pink background and then subtle variations of blue lines and orange/red circles. I wanted the colors to appear softer in real life version.
Also for this piece I opted to created the three sections using all raw edge applique because the pieces were so interlaced that piecing it would have been nearly impossible.
So I first I cut my pink background blocks the needed size and then cut out the elements backed with fusible web. Using a ruler and tweezers I carefully placed and each piece overlapping the pieces as needed. Once I had all three blocks fused I used a simple zigzag stitch and matching threads to finish the edges of each piece.
After zigzagging the edges I pressed and found that my pieces had shrunk by about a quarter inch in each direction so I trimmed them up a little and edited my borders to accommodate the new smaller size.
The pink block sections measured at 6x16 each and the entire quilt finished at 22x28. The perfect size for a little wall hanging.
I'm looking forward to the next class and working out a quilting plan.
Now I have six more thumbnails to turn into quilts!
