Trailing Peonies and a Cyclamen Pattern
My first attempt was the Cyclamen, which did not actually "trail" very well, but I continued with it just to learn the technique. I made another pattern with peonies that worked better and played with some colorways. I like how the layers build it and how the class breaks down a digitally made design in a way that more closely replicates the multi-block printing technique. I also had no idea that so many colors were used in some of those wallpapers - what a job to print them evenly!
This was a nice way to use local color inspiration as well as colors I tend to decorate with. I went back again with more attention to the weight of my lines and was able to do a few colorways with my new chrysanthemum print below.
I still am having trouble lining up the edged in illustrator for the repeats, though. Maybe this was too ambitious for an illustrator novice?
