I thought I'd try out the magnetic lasso tool. To make it easy, I found an old photo that had a nice sky blue background.

Below is the result of using this tool. It didi leave some edges that needed editing.

I used the standard lasso tool to clean up the edges.

Then I added a black background to find any more edges that needed cleaning up.

 

There were a few milky looking edges, so I cleaned these up with the standard lasso tool.

 

I picked out the seeds and played with the levels to bring out some of the detail.
