Spiderbaby

Got a Speedball kit on a whim a while back, wanting to take a little break from digital art. I've done screen printing at the local printmakers' association and I've carved wood, this seemed like it might be an interesting mix of the two. It wasn't! It was a lot of fun as its own thing, I'll be doing more.

I pulled up an old Inktober piece that seemed like it would be forgiving if I didn't get the finer details.

I decided to add a little caption to play with reversing text. Coochie Coo was a VERY BAD CHOICE. Only when I printed it out did I realize that it mirrors horizontally. It got so confusing, I had to stop and triple check that it was right before committing to cutting the letters!

Transferring the image using pencil lead just wasn't happening, I couldn't get a mark to stick on the rubber. I actually tried old fashioned carbon paper, no mark. I tried printing it on rice paper and that accomplished the transfer but I'm guessing was way more work than it needed to be.

I think the next block will be sketched straight on before carving and I'll just reverse the reference image instead.

I like how it turned out once I got the hang of rolling the ink! I'd like to experiment with other types of blocks, fun fun ;D

Thanks so much for this course, it was a huge help to finally crack this kit open and give it a try!
