Smoke - Ascending Motifs
First off, i would like to say that this was an excellent class.
I did the "Smoke" exercise, starting with a very low-turbulence phrase and gradually trying to ramp it up. Each iteration of the phrase is repeated twice.
I transposed each iteration a a little bit up each time, so it wouldn't get boring to listen to :)
Here's what i did at each step:
1. Iteration - The unchanged phrase.
2. Iteration - I moved the 3rd instance of the primary motif to start on a higher note.
3. Iteration - I played with the intervals and expanded them in two places - at the second appearance of the primary motif, and before the secondary motif.
4. Iteration - I started truncating some of the notes, and changed the intervals even more - expanded some, shrunk some others.
5. Iteration - I truncated and removed even more notes, and switched up the intervals of the secondary motif. I also added in a new motif near the end, inspired by the downwards motion of the primary motif.
All in all, this was a really fun exercise. I might try it in reverse in the future, or try to make something with even more turbulence since i feel i was till a bit on the conservative side here :D
