Anna this is really cute and honestly a great way to learn this technique. I would highly suggest doing this a few times is such a quick exercise were you can experiment with the amount of paint you put on your brush how wet your brush is and how wet the paper is. Saying all that it could be a paint as well. What brand are you using? And also bear in mind every single paint has its own character some like to spread more than others.

Thank you, Jane.  I was using a cheap brand of watercolours to use them up. I have got Windsor &amp; Newton Cotman tubes, but not many colours; I'll have to mix my own and try with those.

I couldn't get my pigment to spread out as much as yours, I'm using the Brockingford paper, different paints though.
