Self-Portrait

Self-Portrait - student project

This represents myself in my artist process and personality. I am a perfectionist with OCD who loves doodling, and while I dove head-first into this project, I am hyper-critical of my art.

I began on the paper from left to right. I initially was going to go colorless, however, I began filling with ink where I felt 'I had messed up or been sloppy'. The color started because my daughter and I found prismacolor markers on sale at Michael's for $1 each. Blue is my favorite color and orange represents my bright personality with the grays, black ink, and pencil referring to a struggle with anxiety/depression.

The devisive lines show my movement from just haphazardly using lines and techniques trying to get used to the use of lines and shapes to make art; feeling like a failure because I couldn't understand the motion of the lines. On the right hand side, there is a more purposeful method to my process as I began understanding how to manipulate the pens, markers and rulers to achieve the outcome of the techniques presented in the videos. I also began using color less as a 'mistake cover up' and using it purposefully to balance the color and mood I wanted to accomplish.

I have also been trying to learn a new shading technique with my pen, and I'm struggling with that, so the second biggest circle is another attempt that technique I have been trying to learn on my own. I used my markers to shade in and blend color because I did not achieve the look I wanted.
