For my “Becoming an Artist” class, I chose a commission project from a friend who had taken a striking photograph of a robin during his trip to Ireland. What he loved most was the bird’s attitude — standing confidently, facing the camera with puffed, colorful plumage. That energy became the emotional anchor of my work.

Using the ideation techniques from this course, I was able to organize my thoughts and plan the project with clarity. I began by researching the specific robin species and studying its colors. To strengthen my skills, I took two crash courses on Skillshare — one focused on pencil drawing robins, and another on light and shadow techniques. These helped me refine my approach and visualize the bird more effectively.

I developed two prototype compositions: one based directly on the original photo, and another with a cherry blossom background to introduce a poetic contrast. I experimented with both acrylic and oil paints, testing surfaces like oil-finished paper and gesso board. I gave myself a four-week timeline to complete the work, which helped me stay focused and intentional.

Though I love painting in oil, I wanted to challenge myself with a quicker execution. Acrylic offered that speed and vibrancy. I conducted a detailed color study to prepare — mapping out oranges, yellows, purples, and greens, and determining the right mixes, values, and hues. This allowed me to paint fluidly without second-guessing my palette.

Throughout the process, I sought feedback from my husband and the friend who commissioned the piece. I initially withheld the cherry blossom version to gauge his reaction to the more straightforward interpretation. To my delight, he loved the acrylic version — and ultimately asked to keep all four prototypes.

This project was a turning point. The course helped me organize my ideas, embrace experimentation, and trust my instincts. I learned to balance creative freedom with client expectations, and to be more mindful of atmosphere, shadow, and detail. Most of all, I gained confidence in my ability to plan, execute, and deliver meaningful work.
