Hi Elaine ! You're off to a great start! Your abstract exploration feels very free and fun, and your study of the portrait is really wonderful! You captured the essence of the lights and the darks really well, and I think it's a great way of preparing the watercolor piece you're planning for. You inspired me to do Notan portraits in this class! I made them in Procreate, but I will take my inkt en brushes to do more black and white portraits.

Well, secretly, I use a graphics program to create a notan --- then create my notan from that. Shortcut.

Never mind! You had to paint it by yourself! Just by doing and looking you learn! And it is beautiful! Love the purple color!

Hey Elaine, you said this is a ‘notan’, but I am not sure what that is? However you accomplished it, you really portrayed image without needing all the details. The way you used contrast and line work together to form the composition if fantastic. :)

A notan is simply a study in black and white only - what's in shadow is black - what's in light is white. It helps when planning compositions and helps in choosing colors. Thanks for commenting.
