Hello Melissa, I m very happy to see your class project. I will be waiting for your other projects as well. As a beginner you have done a great job, you can consider working on your brush stokes and slowly it will give you better output.Incase you have any doubts feel free to ask them. Hello Melissa, Yes Gouache and watercolors are very different. We need to make a good consistency of water and color together to get a nice matte finish. It takes some time but slowly it will give better output. 

In your second class project, I can observe the background is even more vibrant, clear and warm.
