Music theory exercises

I've created a google doc with pictures but also added the links below if the google doc doesn't work.

  1. Basics: Scales
  1. Create a short melody based on a scale
    https://youtu.be/Y3HyCrfXeHM

III. Chords: Triads

  1. Play a few triads on the MIDI grid
    https://youtu.be/apMMpTMQ4f8

The first 4 chords evoke a sad mood before it brightens up

III. Chord Series: Diatonic Major

  1. Make a very short piano sketch

III. Chord Series: Diatonic Minor

  1. Make a very short piano sketch

I couldn’t decide in which octave I wanted the bassline so I placed it in both and I like it better that way

  1. Concepts: Advanced Rhythm
  1. Create a loop using syncopation

  2. Create a complex beat

I can’t figure out how to incorporate the chords. As soon as I add them it doesn’t sound cohesive anymore and becomes very crowded. Having the chords progress over multiple bars makes them too long or sound really disconnected from the rest

  1. Create 30-60 seconds of music

  2. I picked a key at random and started with a piano sketch which would become the chorus.  I started with the “1” chord and added some tension by following it up with the “2” chord and “3” chord in the scale. The bar then ends with the “6” chord which after the “2” and “3” chord feels more resolved. Then I added some rhythm to the chords by listening to what felt right.
After the chords I created a melody by playing around on the notes while the chords were playing for the first 2 bars of the melody. For the second 2 bars I started with the first 2 as a base and experimented with moving the notes.
Lastly I created the bass line by starting with the base notes of the chords and then playing around with the rhythm of it.
I then created the drum loop that would go with the chorus. I then wanted to create a verse that contrasted the chorus but the piano sketch I came up with didn’t feel contrasting enough. I still liked it and kept it as a build up later in the song.
The verse I focused on more contrast with the chorus so I started with the last chord of the chorus for the chords and then made a slower melody.
Lastly I created an intro by taking the chorus and stripping it down to a minimum.

After creating all the parts I found instruments to go with the parts but my instrument selection is the most lacking next to the mixing of the track.
Overall I’m quite happy with how it turned out and I play it just as a track I enjoy.
