Majestic Orcas

I am thrilled with Will's latest tutorial as orcas are a favorite subject of mine. It's stunning to watch pods of transient orcas swim by our summer campsite in Port Townsend. Will's tutorial really captured the magnificence of these giant dolphins.

Painted on Arches cold press paper with Will's paint palette colors. This was the first time I used my Daniel Smith Lavender paint stick for highlights and it worked quite well.

My painting assistant, Boris, and I watching Will demonstrate how to make the splashes.  I used my Tim Holt Alcohol Ink Blower for the air instead of a straw.

I painted this one immediately after finishing the tutorial.  It went fast as I still remembered all the steps.  This was from a personal photo taken at Sea World.

One last post using this air blower splash technique.  I love to photograph and paint or draw carousel horses and menagerie. Because this was a small painting  I used a frisket film to mask the orca then painted the splash over it. This was created in my Etchr cold press carousel themed sketchbook.
