Little Squirrel's Forrest

Little Squirrel's Forrest - student project

I really enjoyed this class. Liz is so inspiring and enthusiastic. I have always hand drawn nature in my sketchbooks and always have been inspired by the woods, wildflowers and acorns. I knew I needed to start creating more characters within my work however I was scared to start, until I seen this class on Skillshare.

I decided to focus on a squirrel, we have lots of these cheeky wee red squirrels running around our back garden. I started to sketch out a character and found that I was being too realistic (as I often am) so I had to let loose a bit and try to simplify my line work.

The pencil tool was a wonderful tool to help me with my fear of drawing animals. I scanned in my initial sketch as instructed and got to work on building shapes.

I also love to create textures and use Lino printing within my work so luckily I had a bank of textures scanned in to use on little squirrel. I enjoyed making these marks and amazing to see that they can give such depth to a drawing.

I then scanned in my line drawings, I love to draw with black pens and often struggle to fill the shapes with colours, thanks to Liz I now know how to use the live paint tool. Thank you so much for this game changer Liz!

After image tracing my flowers I filled them with colours and added them to my little guy. I then decided to add the acorn shaped background to give an idea as to what the theme of my collection will be. I cannot wait to develop this design into a repeat pattern and add it to my online portfolio.

Thank you so much Liz, you have really made a wonderful class that has inspired me, I have learned so much valuable lessons. I cannot wait to create more little critters.

Take care, and happy drawing,
