I was experimenting with mixing cursive and very blocky letters on the same design and then decided to add more words when I was almost out of room.   Preplanning has advantages for sure, but I also like the randomness of putting on paper what is happening in my brain.



Here is an example of doing everything all at once and using a whole bunch of techniques in one sample.  It was fun to experiment, and one thing I learned is that I probably will go a bit more simple next time and only use two or three techniques per project, and then do more projects.

Here is an example of keeping the more simple approach with only a couple of colors, and adding some embellishments to make it more interesting.
