Instructor Project Example
Hello, everyone! I hope you're enjoying the class!
I'm currently working on a revision, and I've used a combination of a tentpole outline with chapter by chapter to figure out what needs to change where.
Here's my tentpole outline for that:
External arcs:
War: First tent pole (25%) - Prophecy officially announced, Midpoint (50%) - Lana learns about team, makes decision about missions, Second tent pole (75%) - Lana and Dan join Jorith’s group
Prophecy: First tent pole (25%) - Official announcement, Dan and Lana learn their parents knew about it, Midpoint (50%) - Lana purposefully fails mission, Dan poisons Kira, Second tent pole (75%) - Jorith tells Lana he doesn’t believe prophecy is real
Internal arcs:
Lana (learning to trust): First tent pole (25%) - starts to trust Dan after midwinter, Midpoint (50%) - decides THAT was a bad idea and that she needs to work on her own, Second tent pole (75%) - actually talks to Dan and decides that oh, hey, she’s an idiot
Dan (standing up for what he knows is right): First tent pole (25%) - happy to be singled out by prophecy (good attention), Midpoint (50%) - Chooses palace over Lana, but begins to question things after being asking to poison Kira, Second tent pole (75%) - Decides Lana is more important than the Palace and to tell her everything
Relationship:
First tent pole (25%) - I feel like it’s got to be midwinter, when Dan saves Lana (currently too early, but might be wigglable) (suppose it could be first kiss), Midpoint (50%) - Dan chooses Palace over Lana, Second tent pole (75%) - Dan and Lana clear up miscommunications at border (little late in book, but I think it’s okay)
I do tentpoles for each of my arcs--internal, external, and for relationships, if there is an important one for the plot. Since it's dual viewpoint, I've included tentpoles for both characters. It's also a little more casual, since it is a revision and I already know what happens in the book in general.
So far this is working quite well; I'm about 70% through the revision.
Let me know if you're having any issues with your outlines! And feel free to follow along with me over in my outlining workshop!
