Hannibal’s Rules

This project has really ignited my imagination. The story made me giggle and seeing Fabio’s design processes has sparked an new enthusiasm of potential that I’m going to run with. The idea of creating a whole storyboard fills me with excitement. So much so I’m going to have a go at illustrating the whole story.

As I complete each stage I will share.

Here are my initial Hannibal character studies. Having twin sons I had plenty of inspiration for mischievous personality traits. Hannibal’s Rules - image 1 - student projectHannibal’s Rules - image 2 - student project

Here is my finished storyboard. I had enormous fun coming up with each page concept. As it my first ever attempt at illustrating a whole story, I am rather happy at the results so far. I'd love some feedback though, so comment away if there's anything that needs reconsidering.

I'm not 100% sure about the placement of the text so formatted it approximately for now, I'll experiment in photoshop once I've created the full colour spreads.

Given that I have not approached a project in such a conceptual way before, I wondered if my ideas were age-appropriately readable. And pondered if the bull-like charging and boyband singing vegetables would resinate with a younger audience.

I've spent hours looking at children's books I'd brought from local charity shops. Amusing myself with the delightful tales, hugely varied drawings and even more diverse concepts. However, it wasn't until I saw my 2 year old nephew playing matador with his grandad and a tea towel, that I recalled (my twins are adult now) just how imaginative kids really are. The slightest suggestion and they're off, creating fantastical stories in their minds. Forging wondrous mental images from moment to moment.

Playing around with colour has been joyful. Inspired by Hannibal’s spirited personality I experimented with a bright colour palette to produce a bold and energetic look. Adding texture and detail is the next stage. I’m going to approach it logically and work on repeating elements together to insure consistency.
