Early Season Backcountry

Early Season Backcountry - student project

Environmental action

1/2000, f5, ISO 200, 50mm

Thought process: I wanted to illustrate the height of the mountains and the untouched snow. The snowboarder is placed in the bottom right corner to show the direction where he is going. The slightly overblown highlights of the snow in the midground are somehow like a void which is going to be explored.

Peak action

1/2700, f6.3, ISO 200, 80mm

Thought process: The rider is again placed in the bottom third of the frame to give the sprays dynamic enough space. The harsh, backlit nature of the light give a nice contrast to the snow blown by the wind. I decided to edit the picter as BW to focus on the contrast and shapes. This way the subject is separated from his surroundings.

Motion Blur

1/13, f8, ISO 160, 68.7mm

Thought process: Since it was early in the day and everbody was warming up I tried to experiment with motion blur on the downrail. I am quite happy how I "froze" the rider on the rail. Unfortunatley the cairlift are kind of distracting.
