Drawing Patterns: 14 Days Of Mindful Drawing For Self-Care

Drawing Patterns: 14 Days Of Mindful Drawing For Self-Care - student project

Here are my 14 pattern drawings, with some notes about my drawing process:

Day 1: Concentric

I really enjoyed the simplicity of this drawing, although I think because of its simplicity I had to be more mindful of staying in the present moment, so all those little tricks of changing direction, starting point etc were really helpful. I definitely found it really meditative though, and felt the benefits after drawing it!

Day 2: Random Fill

I found drawing slowly really challenging whilst drawing this pattern - I really had to keep reminding myself to slow down, but I'm glad that I persevered because I think it really changed the experience of drawing it

Day 3: Uniform Fill

I really enjoyed the repeating motion of this drawing - even though it made my hand ache! I find the looping shape really natural and fluid, and I found myself really relaxing into it. The counting was really tricky for me in this particular drawing - but I think this was due to drawing whilst filming, talking etc - so I had too many things trying to compete for my attention! When I have drawn this pattern before when not being filmed, I've found the counting super helpful in keeping me present

Day 4: Shape Fill

I loved drawing this pattern - The circle shape really resonates for me - there is something about circles that makes me really happy - and it sits well with the intention of harmony I was setting for myself. The pattern itself reminds me of nature which I think helped to keep my attention on the idea of harmony too (and it really suits being photographed on green with plants!). I felt really calm after I'd drawn this.

Day 5: Stripe

I enjoyed the wonkiness of this pattern! I also really enjoyed using the brush pen to fill in areas black - I liked the way the brush pen felt using it in this way. I found that I did feel calmer, and as though my breathing was slower by the end of the drawing, although I usually don't feel I can change my breathing consciously - so I think it was just because creating the drawing had that effect on me.

Day 6: Grid

I had to keep wrestling with my inner perfectionist with this drawing - because I do love wonkiness, and it's more 'me' but somewhere inside there's a little voice telling me it should be neater and more accurate - I think this is heightened when drawing a grid-based pattern. The reframing exercise actually really helped me out here - I was thinking more about how terrifying it is to be drawing on camera, and the self-doubt that creeps in around creating an online class - so I worked really hard to try and reframe those thoughts as positive ones. I actually really like this drawing in all its wonkiness, and looking at it reminds me now of those positive thoughts.

Day 7: Straight Lines

I enjoyed this pattern drawing because I got really absorbed in it - having to keep thinking about the angles of the lines really helped me to stay present, and I felt really relaxed after drawing it. The mindful exercise was letting go of perfection - and although my lines are definitely not perfect, I was a bit surprised by how straight they turned out - I wonder if it's because I was thinking about and accepting them not being very straight..?

Day 8: Curved Lines

This drawing was really impactful for me: I found myself getting very absorbed in it, and it made me feel grounded and positive. I think it may be that the curved line pattern demanded quite a lot of my attention as I had to keep thinking about how the curved lines would shift and change as the shapes changed, so I kept very present for this drawing - it's one I think I'll come back to and draw again.

Day 9: Radiate

Just looking at this drawing makes me feel warmth and energy! The circle shape resonates really strongly for me, so I think this also has a lot to do with it. I was thinking about the sun as I was drawing it. I think it would be great to re-draw this in color.

Day 10: Overlap

I really enjoyed drawing this pattern, and I like the way the directional marks are working together, but I think the most impact from this drawing came from the mindful exercise and being more accepting of my monkey mind and letting the 100000000000000 thoughts just sit there and do their thing whilst I carried on drawing. Game changer!

Day 11: Organic

This is one of my favorite prompts, and I really enjoyed drawing this. Drawing shapes that touch somehow makes the whole process less daunting, I think because it removes some of the millions of options and decision-making about where to draw a shape next, and I really enjoy seeing the pattern grow across the page from a single shape. The pattern itself is also making me think about nature, which is a theme that seems to resonate for me in pattern drawing.

Day 12: Colored Lines

I loved this drawing - it was really simple to draw, but had quite a big impact. The blue I picked is quite a vibrant, intense blue, so it made me feel calm and energized (rather than calm and relaxed). It made me think of the feeling you get from eating a mint if that makes sense?!

Day 13: Colored Background

It took me a few minutes to settle into the different drawing materials for this drawing, but once I felt comfy with those, the vibrant pink and blue worked their magic! The blue paint marker is quite an intense, vibrant blue, but the vibrant pink background seemed to double its impact, and vice versa. I LOVED this color combination, it felt so energizing!

Day 14: Color Shape

If you've watched the class, you'll know about my 'thing' for orange and yellow circles - so you can probably guess that this drawing made me super happy! The vibrant pink fineliner turned orange on top of the yellow, so I ended up with yellow, orange, and vibrant pink - all colors which I find make me feel energized and happy. Coupled with the circle shape, this drawing ticked a lot of my happy boxes!
