I know my conflict is not very interesting, but I really struggled with this prompt, I thought I could come up with something stronger than I did, but I learned a lot from this class regardless.
Draft - Henry waited downstairs, dressed as the old man from Disney's UP. Amber wouldn't leave without her grandmother's purse. It was a priceless family heirloom and the last piece of her costume. The clock struck seven. Its ticking grew louder, reminding them that time was running out.
She climbed the creaky stairs to the dark attic, surrounded by the smell of decay. Her phone's torch cast an eerie glow, revealing rows of cardboard boxes stacked like sentinels.
In the dusty attic, Amber spotted her childhood dollhouse. Above the rooms and furniture, something caught her eye. Curious, she squeezed between two heavy boxes to reach a small box on the doll's roof.
The musty smell of old things took her back in time. As she opened the velvet box, she discovered her grandmother's antique wedding ring. A tear slipped down her cheek, leaving a salty trace of emotion.
As she descended the ladder, the wooden rungs creaked in the silence. "I thought I had lost it," she said to Henry, her voice brittle with anxiety.
Henry's face darkened. "I hid it," he muttered. "I was scared it was for us."
She tore off her costume, the fabric ripping apart. Glittering shards fell to the floor. She ran to their bedroom and slammed the door. Henry stood frozen, the silence heavy around him. His eyes were glued to the door, his mind racing with the consequences of his actions. Guilt and shame washed over him. He understood their relationship had changed forever.
