Doll Chair

Doll Chair - student project

I’m in a doll chair,

arms in thighs.

I’m in a glass jar

of floss samples–

lychee, pina colada, orange.

It's July.

It's receptionist-on-vacation.

It's forgot-my-phone.

And waiting-for-my-ride.

I’m a menstrual pad I don’t trust

over white, patchwork upholstery.

I’m two incidental glances,

no talk made,

under calligraphy decal EXIT sign.

I’m extra green out the window.

I’m stale,

out of bed.

Tongue over fluoride-rough teeth.

Notes:
The observation exercise felt helpful because I've been slipping into using more feelings verbs in my writing lately. Anxiety comes through. "I'm stale, out of bed," does a lot of work to tell the story of how this dentist appointment was my first time out of the house in 15 days. There are textures to being disabled and in a larger body in public that would make this poem more interesting and meaningful to me, perhaps with future drafts.

I enjoyed imagining being in a glass jar of floss samples. :)

Thanks for the class! Feedback welcome.
