Notes:

----------------------------------------------
I've always been intimidated by the idea of concptual illustration. Despite visual journalism having been my major at college. I've always been very comfortable working literally, so I wanted to challenge myself to work on this level. Really enjoyed how this class broke things down and really made it a lot more attainable

For my peice I chose an opinion headline from our local paper: College Presidents: Gap in Whatcom college enrollments is challenge for all. After going through all the brainstorming excersises I honed in on 3 concepts.

I had a few ideas of bridging the gap, college presidents paving the way, helping build the bridge to shorten the gap.

I was also thinking about a play on the game of life, which I thought could potentially be more unique than just the standard two paths metaphor. I thought I could add a hand trope with the administrator's hand helping "fix" the gap problem.

The third idea was a play on idea of nurturing. While the gap is the problem, the article speaks to college administrators finding pathways for students to make them successful. I thought of this as a nurturing act. Also, it's making a plea against community loss, which made me think of a community garden. I went with this because it seemed the least potentially like an act out. (Nurturing vs "literal" bridging the gap).

While I liked the gardening idea, I wasn't sure it it didn't make the missing peice or gap concept clear enough. Is this business person just nurturing new students? And I thought the bridging the gap might have been a little too literal/act-out ish. So I went with the game board.
