Color mixing

Color mixing - image 1 - student project
Just getting started with three primary colors. Feeling a bit overwhelmed to think of doing this with all my paints and their many different combinations, but these exercises are a great way to get to know your colors and what they can do. Endless possibilities! I began with three W&N colors- Permanent Rose, Cadmium Yellow Pale-Cotman, and Cobalt Blue-Cotman. I had a little trouble keeping the paint thickness consistent (I got better by the second page) but still found it interesting to see how the colors change.
Then I switched out Permanent Rose for Scarlet Lake (also W&N), keeping the same Yellow and Blue- mixing two, then all three colors. For the last column, I added water to the adjacent color before moving on just to see how it would lighten up. Very interesting. My favorites overall were the yellowy greens and the mid-range browns on the second page.
So much to explore! I will continue with these exercises and use them as a little break between projects, making more swatches for reference.
But, a little at a time.
Thanks to Anne, for this methodical and easy to follow approach to “color confidence”!

Below, trying out some other colors…
