Hi Gabriela! I know how you feel about backgrounds. I will always remember some advice given to me a long time ago about painting or drawing the non-focus subject (backgrounds, patterns, etc.) and that was that we need to try to treat them with as much time and care as the focal subject. In reality, that is really hard to do because (if you're like me) you can feel so excited and thrilled with getting the subject right that I tend to rush the rest of the painting - or, at least, I don't practice those secondary elements as much. Your tree work is looking great (love the bark and the leaf marks) but I would suggest to make some studies just of backgrounds to figure out what works. Look at depth/distance, and how the background can lead the eyes to the focus element (the tree, in this case). You can even create a background (sky, land, etc.) then use Indian ink to create your tree over it all (in pure silhouette black) to see if it works well together. I still fight the urge to rush through my backgrounds and skies, but they are just as important to study and practice as the main subject. I'd love to see some more added to your project when you have time. Project
Honestly, I do not like my project-painting at all. I just can&lsquo;t do an acceptable background that feels &bdquo;right&ldquo;. But I feel more comfortable painting trees (like the one above) now after having taken this class.
