Art Directing for the Web

Episode 2:
Two articles, written on two different platforms, about the Netflix film 'Velvet Buzzsaw' were published about a week apart share similar information, but represented in a completely different way. One by The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/30/movies/velvet-buzzsaw-review.html ) and the other by JUNKEE (https://junkee.com/netflix-velvet-buzzsaw-review/192139 ) .

Immediately, The New York Times has a more organized and straight forward tone. Their layout is simple and delivers the information without so much extra buzz or ads surrounding it. The font is one that many are accustomed to, Times New Roman, as it is easy to read and recognizable. While reading, the audience gets a rather unbiased delivery of the plot, actors and overall review of the movie.

On the opposite end, JUNKEE, seems to be a lesser known site. I had to go through about 3 pages of a google search to find them and given by the amount of ads, they might be relying on outside funding. Their layout is similar to The New York Times, but their tone and font choice is quite different. Using a san serif font that is less, immediately, recognizable and gives a more casual tone of voice. JUNKEE speaks on a more opinionated, almost personal, view point of a review. The site uses more images and outside sources than The New York Times to add to their mixed review such as audience tweets on their interpretations of the film: a much more approachable site to leave comments and open to audience's critiques on the actual article  as opposed to The New York Times which only offers a clear, straight forward review of the film and its plot.

Currently I am not with any organization, so all the responsibilities of representation online and in print falls onto myself.

Episode 3:
(I believe I might have had some overlap and repeats when defining my relationship and values.)

What relationship do I want to have with customers and clients:
-Casual and Comfortable (Approachable)
-Collaborative
-A chance to stay connected afterwards

What are my brand values:
-Teamwork; I enjoy the work better collaboratively with clients
-Messy; I am not afraid to work with different mediums to achieve a better end product
-Whimsy; I love including humor, and a sense of childlike wonder and imagination to my work
-Colors are complimentary; colors are an afterthought unless specifically wished by client

Episode 5:

Someone who is visiting my website is looking for a designer to illustrate & design graphics for fiction (most of the time) and who uses a minimal color palette.

Name: Ellen
Age: Early to Mid 30s
Gender: Female
Martial Status: Single
Occupation: Paper designer
Location: DC

Ellen works for a design firm within DC where she needs help producing and creating designs for their stationary to add to their inventory.

As an illustrator and designer that enjoys stationary and decorative paper, I need to match my aesthetics to the company so that I can get hired and start making a name for myself.

While making posters is helpful, I feel that I should make sure to follow and interact with companies on social media and follow design trends. (Posters might come later)

Episode 6:

-Someone visiting my website might infer that I am a recent college graduate who enjoys traditional illustrating and works of fiction. I'm whimsical, rather easy going and I enjoy collage combined with other forms of mixed media. My palette is simple and is kept in a way to stick with my overall aesthetic.

-My style and approach to working might make someone feel relaxed and unafraid to share their own interests when it comes to fiction, fantasy and things not usual for day to day life as most if not all of the work is child and comic book like. They could feel that the work is basic, but still has a gentle or even heavy handed approach to designing.

-I personally feel that they will feel a sense of ease. I'm a very approachable and go with the flow kind of person who can adapt, respond and communicate fairly well between clients. I want to make sure they get exactly what they want, while still being open to new ideas and creative collaborating between the two of us.

-Those visiting my website need to be aware that I prefer fiction and do not work well with still life or realism. My palette is the spectrum of black to grey to white with only one singular supporting color (usually red). Digital art is not my strongest skill, but it is coming along.

-They might feel, knowing the above, that I can be all over the place and that I am still working on expanding and advancing my skills to provide the best quality of work that I can. A viewer might feel concerned as it looks like I may still be finding my strengths, but can (hopefully) appreciate that I can deliver what they need.
