A motley crew of creatures!! :D

A motley crew of creatures!! :D - student project

Sooo first off let me say that I did not do just a SINGLE page of creatures like you've seen in the class, but instead I did MANY!
I'll share first the one from the class of course, so you can see the details and textures you might want to try: my favorite creatures from this page are the bird on the top right, the weird 'spikey' four-legged creature at the bottom right and the green human-sized character on the left. Though I do also really love the red and grey patterned creature, I'm not a huge fan of the 'position' of the creature, so that's something I could explore more in another iteration!

but let me show you all the other textures and creatures I made, some more messy, and others a bit cleaner and more organized!

I love how even just using a graphite pencil can give you a ton of different textures, depending on the types of strokes you create:
(also the crocodile-like creature reading a book is a favorite for sure)

An even MESSIER page of  creatures and textures, because who said we needed to be clean and organized all the time??? haha

another page of creatures, with a bunch of them I really love and where I also did 'blind' drawing (maybe I should create a class about that sometime!). My favorites are the owl in the middle, the weird elk-like creature on the left , and the 'bear' seen from the profile at the top.

and finally, a set of VERY organized creatures, which I had prepped when I was thinking of launching the class and wanted to give an example of the kinds of things you could achieve using the techniques of texture exploration and freeform creature play! The only one I used a reference for is the monkey on the bottom left, and maybe the pangolin too? The neon pangolin is definitely a fave, but so is that weird blue blob on the right, and the weasely creature right underneath that!

What I love love love about exploring textures, and creatures, is that (a) textures are easy to do, and don't require too much anguish about 'what am I going to draw', they just need some different art materials, and a willingness to play around with making marks. And (b), creatures are infinite, from simple blobs to more complex animals, and that starting WITH the textures kind of breaks that idea that you need to know where you're going before you draw.
Just allow yourself to make shapes, and beaks or arms, and eyes, and legs, and feathers, and horn, and all the things that you know creatures imaginary and real can have. And you can surprise yourself so much with those discoveries!!

and (c) because this subject is infinite!! Something to use and reuse whenever you're feeling dry on inspiration and want to get creative. Just start with textures, and you'll already learn a ton just by doin that!

I can't wait to see yours :)
