7 Gouache Floral Paintings

Here are all the paintings from the class and my thoughts on each one:

Winter Aconite (Setsubun-So) flowers ↑

Here you can see all the details and textures clearly, and how they shine when viewed up close in high quality. I think the texture is even more impactful in real life because it plays beautifully with shadow and light.
I love this unique quality of gouache, because its chalkiness makes dry brush paintings possible. It’s difficult to achieve this effect with oil paints, since oil naturally creates smooth, wet textures, the opposite of dry textures.

Eryngium ↑

Looking back at this painting, I want to add brighter and more playful colors to it, and maybe create a more detailed decorative frame.

Hellebores ↑

One of my favorite paintings. I added so many little details that make this piece feel interesting and captivating; it almost looks like the cover of an old book.

Incurved Chrysanthemum ↑

The contrast between the light and dark colors is perfect in this one. It’s very simple, but incredibly impactful.

Snake’s Head Flower ↑

My absolute favorite flower! That’s why I included it in this painting challenge. It gave me the opportunity to play with textures on the flower heads, and I think it pairs beautifully with the neutral background.

Pink Campions ↑

This is the painting I would’ve liked to experiment with more. I think I could’ve added some closed flower buds as tiny pink dots here and there. I also feel this painting would look great in other colors too, maybe blue or white flowers.

Aquilegia McKana Hybrids ↑

I absolutely love how the background turned out. The warm tone underneath and the light blue texture on top look so nice together.
I’ll be honest with you. I’m not the type of person who paints for 30 minutes and feels “done”. I always keep thinking about what could be added or improved. Haha XD

But I hope this inspired you to try something new and not be afraid to experiment with textures! Happy painting!
