Everyone has a story to tell, and it's time to share yours! In this workshop, you'll join three best-selling authors as they share their inspirational, practical, and actionable guidance for writing short stories that make an impact.
Over the course of five weeks, you’ll watch 3 insightful classes, draft a short story of your own, and give and receive feedback with your fellow writers. If you’re eager to start writing, looking for a creative jumpstart, or simply want to share your written creative work in a supportive environment, then this workshop is for you. Perfect for seasoned and first-time writers alike!
Workshop Timeline:
Milestone 1: We’ll start by watching three different classes on creative writing from notable authors. Plan to watch all classes by April 15th.
- First up is Storytelling 101: Character, Conflict, Context & Craft. Renowned urban fantasy writer Daniel Jose Older dives into the fundamentals of narrative storytelling and how to leverage the "4 C's" – character, conflict, context, and craft – to create a compelling narrative.
- Next, we’ll take Creative Fiction Writing: Create a Retelling of Your Favorite Story with Kiersten White. Kiersten shares her step-by-step process for creating a new take on a well-known tale, giving you everything you need to take your favorite story and make it your own.
- Lastly, we’ll dive deep into character development in Writing Character-Driven Short Stories with Yiyun Li. In this class, Yiyun walks you through prompts, strategies, and advice for writing compelling characters, turning situations into stories, and revising work into a polished piece.
Milestone 2: After watching all three classes, reflect on the project prompt from each class and choose the one you want to complete for your final project. Which prompt resonates most with you? Using everything you’ve learned, draft your own personal essay in response to your chosen prompt, and share your work in the applicable class's project gallery by April 29th.
Milestone 3: The final week is all about feedback! Take the time to select 3 projects from your fellow students and give them thoughtful and constructive feedback. You’ll get feedback on your own work as well so you can improve your work and grow as a writer. Complete your feedback by May 6th.
