Sometimes, 'start at the beginning' is bad advice; a writer needs to lay down the groundwork and develop a stronger relationship with the characters they want to write about before they insert them in a story or plot. I think ideally you want your characters to feel like people you've met, people you've shared memories with.
During the four weeks of this workshop, I suggest an outline for following my 'Russian Doll Exercise' so that you can complete your own project with plenty of space to think and tinker. Give me 30 to 60 minutes a week and you'll leave with three scenes of your own that will lay the foundation for a deeper original story. We'll be following this calendar, which I suggest you print out and tape up on a wall next to your writing desk:
