I decided to make my time capsule for New Year's, and have it be about four things from 2020 that I wanted to carry forward with me for 2021.

I really love this idea of making an illustrated time capsule. I think it would be fun to do a few of these at other times in the year, too.

Illustration #1: Gratitude. This is an illustration of my pumpkin patch that I built this year, with a quote from an article ('The Serviceberry: An Economy of Abundance', by Robin Wall Kimmerer) that resonated with me this year. I'm going to use my pumpkin patch again in 2021, and hope to continue cultivating gratitude as well.

 

Illustration #2: Hope. This is about my feeling of hope regarding the COVID-19 vaccines, and was inspired by a scene at the end of the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I'm curious to see how the COVID situation evolves in the new year now that vaccination programs are beginning.

 

Illustration #3: Protest. In Canada during 2020, we had several large protests in support of indigenous land rights and the Black Lives Matter movements. A lot of important and difficult conversations were prompted by these protests and I hope we will carry those conversations forward into this new year.

 

Illustration #4: Tank. This is Tank, my favourite character from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The game was released right at the beginning of lockdown here, and it was so wonderful to have a wholesome game with friendly animal villagers to spend those rough few weeks with. I am still playing the game and I hope to keep playing it all through the coming year!

I made each of my illustrations on 6x8" Strathmore mixed media paper, using Pigma Micron pens, gouache, and coloured pencils. I made an envelope from Kraft paper and washi tape, and sealed it all up until next year!
