Winter Warmth
Experiments
I looked at some examples of knitted mittens in Pinterest, then painted some swatches of Winsor & Newton gouache (not acrylic) on cartridge paper and tried various coloured pencil patterns.
Mittens
I wanted colourful mittens. I decided to use stripes for the palm side of the left mitten, and squares for the back side of the right mitten, with colours ranging from orange to violet. Pink gouache provided the best base layer for this range of colours.
Here is a work-in-progress image showing the pink background with the first two layers of coloured pencil applied over a large area of the mittens. Note that this is a pattern that could be knitted, with the same two colours carrying over from one side of the hand to the other. The somewhat stylised shape of the mittens mirrors the shape of the N in the lettering.
Here are the finished mittens.
