Oh Kristin, you have beautifully mastered the loose style of wet techniques. The dry brushwork you incorporated adds a sense of detail that is not always easy to achieve. Your color arrangement is both loose and free, yet it effectively conveys the story of a cold fall day transitioning into winter. You've left just enough white space on your paper to create a sense of depth. You applied the color at the perfect point of wetness, allowing for remarkable movement within the paints. Well done! Ron has such a unique vision of landscapes and the beauty that surrounds him.

Masterfully done Kristin! The use of a rough paper is your strength in this work. The dry brush sections make the painting sparkle. You have reached a milestone in your technique...and now we must take a real assessment of our personal involvement in the watercolor process. I would give you the permission to say to yourself that this is more than"pretty nice" .It is wonderful. It is wonderful because you have now allowed the paint, water, and pigment to work its magic. The 'spirit of watercolor' has found a place in your creative willingness and your diligent efforts to know the techniques has enabled this magic to happen. That is more than "nice I look at some of my best watercolours and I can truthfully say I have not the faintest idea how they are so wonderful. The magic was at work and I was out of the way. So, this is your quest! Go to nature and paint outdoors. You will have to rely on your interpretive skills and get a personal relationship with your creativeness. Start with a few ink sketches on small watercolor paper and then splash on some color in the studio or at your sketching spot.  You will begin the journey towards your next milestone which is a personal artistic vision.  Proud to have you as a student. You have already helped me a lot. I immediately knew what I had done wrong when I tried to paint trees on a frosty morning last week, the cold colors didn't fit the really fairytale mood at all. You gave me a new understanding and gave me some new ideas. I am very grateful to you for this and look forward to more!!

In fact, I feel this very strongly at the moment and think it's important to draw outside. I'm capturing something completely different. I've been doing it a lot lately as you suggest: a quick sketch with carbon ink - until my fingers freeze - take a photo of where I am and throw some paint on the paper at home. As soon as the temperatures outside get a little milder, I don't just want to use my sketchbook to paint a picture outside. I want the wind, the weather, the noises to help shape the picture.

You are on the path. Add some isopropyl alcohol to your water and you can paint in the cold, It works like antifreeze. Just add it judiciously so it does not make your paints go weird.J.M. Turner (Old Master from England) had himself tied to the mast of a ship he was on during a violent storm. He said if he died we'll so be it but if he lived through it what a painting he would create...and he did!Look to nature and all questions will be answered. Thanks Ron, I'll do that. I'll try your tip. Thank you for that. I watched your video of you painting outside this morning. Thanks for these insights. I see myself right there. I still have no idea what I can implement, I'll probably just make up crap, but I'll have fun and probably cold fingers. I know what for, theoretically, like Turner. :))

We will let the horses bring that home and you bring home some great little gems.

Well, the result was rather sobering. The dogs thought I was having a party with them. They're usually used to me stopping and drawing something, but they thought I was dragging things along for them. They were completely over the moon. 1. Realization: Painting is only possible from a shady place, in the sun it is nice and warm but you can't see anything. 2. Painting is sport, stalking across frozen ground with all the stuff I've brought with me. 3. If you paint in the shade, the paint freezes on the palette and on the paper. 4. Colors behave differently outside. Not that we didn't talk about everything, or at least most of it... Let's see what else can be salvaged from the material.

Kristin, this is fantastic!  Love how my eye is drawn from the tree on the left, along the shore of the river, to the right side.  And gorgeous colors!  Very peaceful.

Thanks for the great course. I learned a lot from it. I haven't been able to implement everything yet, but I think it looks pretty nice. Next time, I definitely have to try the Rembrandt trick. ;))  “Observe more, paint less” is the toughest test. I find it difficult to suppress the impulse and wait for the right timing. I'm looking forward to your other courses!!
