Elaine, lovely paintings! Have you tried to set a limited time for painting like 10-15 minutes? Then you will have enough time to catch the essence and won´t have that extra time to dig into details.Also could be an unconscious willing to make it perfect, but in this world nothing is perfect.Love the splatters effect in the muscle man, really transmits that he is sweating a lot :)

5x7 at the top. Still think realism is getting in my way.
 I tried this muscle man with saturated color and same thing - overworked and strokes not showing.
