Triangulation
“Hey,” her voice cut through the ambient voices around Mike as he meticulously swept discarded napkins into the dustpan he held. She had come back to him, he thought with a cocky smile playing at the corner of his lips.
Finishing his task at hand, he slowly turned to look at her now. “Hey yourself,” he answered. Her gaze dipped from his eyes to her feet, the back up to his eyes as she mustered up the courage to speak.
“We need to talk.” How the words seemed to stick to her tongue, making it sluggish and heavy. Some of her hair fell into her face as she glanced around them before she stubbornly pushed it behind her ears and took a few steps closer to him.
“Okay.” A bead of sweat seemed to gather along her temple to slowly track a path down her face. Mike waited, watching her intently as if to gage what it is she was going to say.
Her gaze darted away from Mike’s, unable to hold it any longer. Self-consciously, Heather rubbed the back of her hand against her lips to remove any sweat that clung to her skin. “I’m late.”
“To what?” he asked, knowing full well what she meant. He wanted to make her squirm, to watch as she grappled with what she was telling him.
“I’m late,” she said slower. It seemed she wasn’t going to give him much more than that.
There was a soft clatter of plastic as he returned to the careless motion of sweeping. “Oh?” it was hard to keep the excitement out of his voice.
“So, I took the test,” she began, finally looking back up to him. “And it’s positive.” Her fingers tugged at the hem of her shirt now, anything to remain occupied.
“You’re positive?” he asked, his eyes dipping down towards her belly. “I mean, you’re sure?”
Her head nodded slowly, “Yes.”
He smiled, turning his back to her to hide it. “Wow.” He made her wait as he scooped up some imaginary trash before looking back at her. The air was heavy with the summer heat and the unspoken words between them. It was his.
