Too many “first” tries at a whole lot of stuff

Watched the class. Printed the handouts. Acquired tubes of gouache. Made pages and pages for backgrounds. Glued them into a sketchbook. Ready to go. Excited. Eager to try gouache after many years on mostly watercolor. Love collage, This all seemed A-OK. I was eager.
Ready. Set. Go. First one would be just in black and white since I'm not gouache-proficient yet.
The white was not opaque. Painting over anything made a mess. I was careful. Actuallly liked the simplicity of this one. Onward!

First time painting on top of dried gouache. I had dried it for a log time and swiped it with a heat tool. The plan was to have bright red berries on top of the collage paper with simplified green leaves. Every color I painted made me feel incompetent. The red was not as bright as the swatch I painted. I had trouble doing the fine work on the leaves, even with fine brushes and riggers. The medium green looks black. Not what I imagined. Discouraging but donel Next!

This was ripped back to a single page. The opposite page has some really cool yellow tulip-ish flowers, but the colors got so messy thst i saved only the part that behaved nicely. Except for the green stem that turned black. Also, using collage, I had awkward where the gouache didn't just paint in but had to be pushed back into the joined aread. I was surprised by how much dry gouache re-wet and changed colors, but not in a good way. It was very bleedy and not in a pretty way.
I tried. Great class. Thank-you, Kate. I thought all my doodle-flower practices and collaging would see me through, but there's more to learn. Not a bad thing. That's why we're here!
