This is the story of a young girl, whose mother develops a condition in which familiar people have been replaced by impostors.  In this story, all members of the family as well as neighbors are replaced by more than one impostor. 

The young girl progresses through to adulthood as her mother is hospitalized, given barbaric electroconvulsive treatment, released from confinement and becomes a shadow of her former self.
