The Wizard's Apprentice

The Wizard's Apprentice - student project

She was about 16. She had no family and as far as she could remember she had no name. She lived in an orphanage with several other kids, but she could never understand why the other kids treated her differently. Until the day when the Wizard arived.

That very night there was a giant storm, it blew down trees and had even blown a roof off of a nearby cottage. And as the children in the orphanage huddled on their cots waiting for the terrifying storm to end there came a loud knock on the door. The girl noticed that this more then anything else made the other kids jump. They all watched as one of the nannys bravely went to the door and with some effort pushed open the door into the wind. She watched as the nanny's jaw dropped open at the impressive figure in the open doorway. Lightning flashed as the man entered the orphanage, it illumunated his tall form, with a flowing robe and floppy pointed hat, undoubtedly it was a Wizard. There were several gasps of fright from the younger kids, but she herself stayed silent. She was interested in the man, and she recalled what she had been taught by the nannys about Wizards. They were a secretive group, full of mystery and magic. And they were occasionally in need of apprentices, she remembered that they often chose their apprentices from children, so that they had a lifetime to study magic. And now as she studied the Wizard she felt a spark, one that made her eyes open wide and caused her to rub her chest, just above her heart. As the Wizard looked over them he made no sound, the only sound came from his robe swishing against the bare floor. Eventualy the Wizard's gaze landed of her and she felt that spark again as they locked eyes. She rubbed her chest again and the Wizard approached her. She wanted to shrink away, but she couldn't, and finally when he stood directly in front of her, the Wizard opened his mouth and spoke. "You child, what is your name?" He asked. The girl shook her head, "I...I haven't one, sir." Her voice trembled slightly as she said it. "I see. Well child this in a grand opportunity for you, I have come to find an apprentice. Will you become my apprentice?" He asked. The girl felt that feeling again and stood. "I will." She said without a daubt in her mind that she was making the right descision. "Then my first act as your teacher will be to give you a name." The Wizard said. he muttered to himself, his eyes closing as he thought. And when his eyes opened she could see that there was a light in them, then he spoke in a reverant tone of voice, "your name is Gabriella. And now you are my apprentice."Gabriellas eyes shown with tears of joy, the Wizard held out his hand to her, and as she took it they glittered away. Leaving Gabriellas old, sad, lonely life, for one full of magic and adventure. A life where she had a name and was, for the first time wanted.
