The Next Apprentice

The Next Apprentice - student project

As Gabriella walked through the village, she was a good foot or two behind her friends. The village reminded her so much of Elmar and as she looked around she felt a small hand tug on the edge of her tunic. She looked down and saw a young boy, he couldn't have been more then six years old, his clothing was torn, he was covered in grime and all alone. He reminded her so much of herself that tears came to her eyes. "Can you spare a coin for food?" He asked. She reached into the small pouch on her belt. "Of course. What is your name?" She asked him. He tilted his head at her. "I don't have one." He said. She crouched down to his level and handed him a few coins. "I am Gabriella though I didn't used to have a name either." The boy stared up at her in suprise. "Your that Gabriella, the.. the Wizard." Gabriella smiled. "I am. And there is something I need to tell you, if you will listen" The boy nodded eagerly. "I can listen." "This is something that my teacher Noland told me. Everyone has a name. Few people know this but magic hears every name, it knows the name of every person and creature. And if you will listen it will tell you what you have never known." The boy looked confused but he smiled nonetheless. "So magic can tell me my name?" She smiled too. "Yes, it told Noland mine when I daubted I could become a Wizard. And here."

She gave the child the pouch with all of her remaining money. "Give this to the caretaker of the orphanage. Life will be better for you and the others there, now go, and listen. Your name is calling." The boy ran off and Gabriella cast a small spell of safety on him so he would reach the orphanage without incident. Then she rose and turned to the others, they were staring at her dumbfounded. "Did you just give all of your savings to that boy?" Kaleb asked. She nodded. "I did." "Why?" He asked. "There was not enough money for the orphanage to buy food, that child was trying to do what he could to help. He was trying to make a better life for not only himself but the others in the orphanage. Don't you remember that one winter? We had almost nothing to eat, and if it hadn't been for that farmer who noticed our needs we wouldn't have survived. And it was only later that I learned the farmer was Noland. A Wizard looks after their own, and a Wizard will not let children starve if they can help it." Shae looked after the boy. "Will he be alright? That was a lot of money and there are always theifs in places like this." "He'll be alright, she cast a spell of safety." Ryshonn said. There was a whisper as the wind blew past them and as she heard it she smiled "Did you hear it?" She asked. Ryshonn was the only one to nod. "Hear what?" Kaleb asked. "The boy's name." She said. "What is his name?" Shae wanted to know. "His name is Jayson." Ryshonn said.

They started walking again and Ryshonn fell into step beside her. "You stopped for more then him having magic, didn't you." Gabriella looked away. "You can tell me you know." He said quietly. "There are a lot of reasons for why I stopped. He reminded me of myself when I was... well, before Noland. And I could feel his potential. He is going to do great things one day." Ryshonn nodded and they walked on in silence for a while. "You aren't telling me everything, and we both know the one thing you aren't saying." He said. She looked him in the eyes. "You do?" She asked softly. Ryshonn nodded.

"Jayson has the tallent to become a Wizard, I felt the connection. And one day, in a few years he will be my apprentice." "And you will be a great teacher." They both smiled and continued on after their friends, and Ryshonn slipped his hand into hers. "You know I think this town will be a better place when we leave." He said. She raised an eyebrow. "How is that?" She asked. "You will have given all of our money away too." She punched his shoulder. "Be nice." "As you wish."
