The sun struggles to break through the gray clouds, casting a dim light on the gritty streets. MARQUALA (40s, African American), walks with determination, her eyes heavy with unspoken dreams. Hip-hop music blares from a nearby car. Her steps are measured, a silent promise etched on her face.
MARQUALA:
(voiceover, determined)
I won't let my kids become victims of this place.
A car roars past, almost hitting Marquala, racing away from police sirens. She jumps back, heart racing. Tears well in her eyes.
MARQUALA:
(voiceover, emotional)
We need out of this hellhole.
INT. FAST-FOOD RESTAURANT - NIGHT
Marquala stands behind the counter, struggling to smile as she interacts with CUSTOMERS. Her manager, MS. THOMPSON, observes from a distance.
MS. THOMPSON:
(encouraging)
Keep up the good work, Marquala.
MARQUALA:
(faint smile)
Thanks, Ms. Thompson.
Marquala's break begins. She takes a moment to wipe away tears before clocking out. She leaves the restaurant, sighing as she gazes at the stars.
EXT. MEETING SPOT - NIGHT
Marquala stands under a flickering streetlight, waiting. Gentry a friend she met in college. They took a business course together (30s, African American, charismatic), arrives.
GENTRY:
(cheerful)
Long day, Marquala?
MARQUALA:
(exhausted)
You have no idea.
They begin to walk.
GENTRY:
(supportive)
You're doing better than you think, Marquala. I can see it.
MARQUALA:

They walk, the city noise a constant background.
GENTRY:
(earnest)
